Position Summary

Legacy Mechanical Group is seeking an experienced Director of Finance to play a key leadership role in the evolution of our finance and accounting organization. This is a senior, hands-on role designed to work collaboratively with the Senior Controller and closely alongside the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to manage day-to-day and monthly financial responsibilities while helping build a more intentional, forward-looking finance function.

The Director of Finance will be a trusted partner to accounting leadership and operational teams, providing technical expertise, process leadership, and financial insight. This role is ideal for a seasoned finance professional who enjoys balancing execution with improvement, and who is motivated by building strong teams, systems, and processes in a growing organization.

Key Responsibilities

Financial & Accounting Leadership

  • Support oversight of accounting operations across multiple entities, including monthly close, general ledger, and financial reporting.
  • Review and analyze monthly financial statements for accuracy, completeness, and clarity prior to executive review.
  • Ensure consistent application of accounting policies, internal controls, and best practices.
  • Serve as a technical accounting resource on complex issues, estimates, and judgment areas.

Partnership with Senior Controller

  • Work collaboratively with the Senior Controller to manage workloads, prioritize activities, and reduce bottlenecks.
  •  Provide technical guidance and support to ensure timely and accurate execution of accounting responsibilities.
  • Assist in developing structure, clarity, and scalability within the accounting team.
  • Promote cross-training, documentation, and redundancy to reduce key-person dependency.

FP&A, Reporting & Business Insight

  • Help develop and formalize financial planning and analysis (FP&A) capabilities.
  • Support budgeting, forecasting, and reforecasting processes.
  • Develop meaningful management reporting, dashboards, and variance analysis.
  • Translate financial data into insights that support operational and leadership decision-making.

Cash Flow & Working Capital Support

  • Monitor cash flow, accounts receivable, accounts payable, retainage, and working capital trends.
  • Support billing discipline and collection efforts in partnership with operations.
  • Assist with lender, bonding, and audit-related reporting and analysis.

ESOP Support & Employee Ownership

  • Support ESOP administration processes in coordination with the CFO, trustee, valuation firm, and third-party partners.
  • Prepare and maintain annual financial and reporting support for the ESOP valuation process, including data requests, schedules, and analyses.
  • Assist with repurchase obligation forecasting and liquidity planning related to employee ownership.
  • Ensure appropriate documentation and controls for ESOP-related reporting and audit support.

Systems, Process & Continuous Improvement

  • Identify opportunities to improve finance processes, controls, and workflows.
  • Partner with internal and external resources to enhance ERP systems, reporting tools, and data integrity.
  • Reduce manual effort through standardization, automation, and improved system utilization.

Leadership & Team Development

  • Coach and mentor accounting and finance team members.
  • Help define clear roles, expectations, and performance standards.
  • Contribute to a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Act as a visible, approachable finance leader across the organization.

Qualifications & Experience

  •  Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA and/or MBA preferred.
  • 10+ years of progressive experience in accounting and finance roles, including leadership responsibility.
  • Strong understanding of GAAP and financial reporting in a project-based or construction environment.
  • Experience with budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis.
  • Demonstrated ability to improve processes, implement systems, and develop teams.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to work effectively across finance, operations, and executive leadership.
